CHAPTER SEVEN

Blake returned to the Triple S, bringing Mandy with him. "She couldn't stand being out of the loop," he told Cooper. "She'd rather be here, fixing sandwiches and coffee for those helping with the search. I hope you don't mind."

"Of course not. Nancy's been trying to do it all while checking on the kids every five minutes. She'll be relieved to have Mandy take over." Cooper kissed Nancy's forehead when she came out of the kitchen and wrapped her arms around his waist. "Why don't you go get some rest, sweetheart? We have everything covered."

"Are you sure? I do need to get some sleep. The baby will be up early."

Cooper nodded. "Go on. I'll wake you up if anything happens."

Once she'd left the room, Cooper and Blake sat at the table to eat the sandwiches Mandy brought them. Blake finished his quickly and stood, pulling his coat back on. "I need to get back out there."

"Oh, that reminds me. Have you talked to Tommy recently?"

"No. My phone died. It's recharging out in the truck right now. What's up?" Blake settled his cowboy hat onto his head and pulled on a pair of thick gloves.

"He has some place he wants to check out, but he needs some back up. He said for you to call him."

"Okay, I'll do it as soon as I get to the truck. Call me if you hear anything else."

Cooper watched from the door as Blake climbed into his truck. He wished he could go with him, but he had to stay and guard Dani. Nick would never forgive him if he let something happen to his sister.

How had this all gone so wrong so fast? If Clay and Dani had just done as they were told and stayed in the house, they wouldn't be in this mess now. His friends wouldn't be out there risking their lives on the slick roads, stomping around frozen fields, looking for Clay.

The longer he thought about it, the angrier he became.

***

Clay had never been so cold and hungry in his life. Or felt so alone. He had no idea how much time had passed, but it felt like hours since his father had tied him to a post in the hay loft of an old barn and left him there. What kind of father did something like that? His old man had to be completely crazy.

His wrists were raw and bleeding from his attempts to loosen the old rope. But his dad knew what he was doing. The knots stayed tight and unyielding. His stomach hurt from not having anything to eat since lunchtime, but his bottom lip was cracked and crusted with blood from when his father had backhanded him in the truck. Clay was pretty sure he couldn't eat anything anyway.

On the other side of the hay loft, he could hear mice or rats scrambling through the rotting hay. Didn't they chew on people if they were hungry? The fear grew as the sounds drew closer.

So this was it.
